Baraka was founded in 2001 with the purpose of training Gospel pioneers to this Muslim country. Senegal is a virtually unreached country with six national languages (French being the official language) and about 10 million people, 95 % of whom are Muslims. Very few conversions from Islam to Christianity and much less Adventism are taking place.
Baraka's headquarters are located just at the border to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. In the beginning training was done by the staff and visiting teachers where Bible doctrines, studies in Islam, contextualized outreach, health, and agriculture was being taught. As time progressed it became more and more difficult to recruit Bible worker candidates. One reason is that of the few church members, most potential candidates were already trained or working in sharing the Good News.
It was then that more direct evangelistic work was started by organizing and sponsoring evangelistic series, providing evangelistic tools and training. Another aspect that grew out of a Sabbath School quarterly was the beginning of radio work in 2003. This has expanded to currently two short programs per week, and one is also braodcast on local TV.
The team discovered that very little material was available for outreach, so Baraka began producing literature. With ASI's help close to 6,000 copies of the book „In Search of the Treasure of Faith“ were printed after having been translated. Many ministers, government officials and civil leaders received a copy and were thus introduced to our faith.
Then, remembering that Ellen White counseled the church to spread literature as the leaves of autumn, another project was launched to produce tens of thousands of small tracts on a variety of Bible subjects. These were produced locally and subsequently given to Bible workers, evangelists and lay members for free.
Currently, Baraka supervises a church planting project in the southern part of Senegal which is made possible through ASI's help. As a result of a Baraka sponsored evangelistic effort, the local authorities have given land to build a church.
All along, the team has been involved in social work: health talks at schools, nutrition programs in cooperation with ADRA Senegal, children's activities, public lectures and food for those in need. This has helped open doors and been a blessing to many.
Through the years thousands of Muslims have had a chance to learn more about the Truth either through the printed word, public meetings or through the media. We pray that the Lord will bless these seeds and let them flourish into an abundant harvest of souls as the team continues to minister to this population in need of Jesus.
