The Tarahumara Mission was built in faith, in a totally unentered area of northern Mexico. A beautiful Health Education Center with worker-housing has been established. A magnificent church is now filling with new members--souls from the Tarahumara tribes. The focus from the beginning has been to reach these gentle, shy people through the health message.
The Tarahumara Indians have lived for centuries in the high Sierra Madre mountains of Northern Mexico. The Tarahumara Indians maintain their own culture and language, and live largely off the land in log or cave homes. Their life of poverty sets the stage for malnutrition and sickness due to poor hygiene. This has kept the mortality rate high and life expectancy low.
The Health Education Center exerts a real influence in the community. A young doctor provides medical leadership and education for the many poor from the surrounding hills and valleys. The center is equipped with an educational facility, examining room, massage tables and steam rooms, thus providing a natural health source for the poor as well as the many tourist who throng Creel and nearby Copper Canyon.
The project, as a direct on-going evangelistic outreach, is funded totally by donations. Many souls have been baptized as three or more evangelistic series a year are conducted and home Bible studies given. The four or five churches in the area are shepherded by lay pastors.
