The Amazon Lifesavers Ministry project is run by volunteer Seventh-day Adventist lay people who are dedicated to reaching villages along the rivers in Brazil’s Amazon jungle region. The project officially began in 2007, continuing the work started by Leo and Jessie Halliwell in the early 1930s.
Using boats to navigate the river “highways,” volunteers travel to hard-to-reach areas providing much-needed medical and dental care. As they help people improve their health, the team is able to build relationships and share the gospel.
Amazon Lifesavers Ministry is based outside Manaus, on the bank of the Amazon River. Currently they operate three boats. From the base, boats will go on trips ranging from two weeks to several months.
More than 200 local part-time volunteers and several full-time families make up the Amazon Lifesavers Ministry team, and mission groups often travel to Brazil to help. The project is growing rapidly and strives to support the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.
