Profile: Fondacioni Almise

Following World War II, Albania aggressively pursued Communist ideology, and increasingly isolated itself from the rest of the world. In 1967, the state-run radio declared the country to be the world’s first totally atheistic nation; however, religious freedom was restored in 1992. Very few Albanians are actually atheists, yet most are somewhat cynical toward religion and Christians are still in the minority in Albania.

Fondacioni Almise is a ministry located in the city of Vlora, on the Adriatic coast. The project began more than a decade ago as a church planting initiative by Adventist Frontier Missions. Transition of the local project to a new board was made in the spring of 2011, and the name was changed to Almise (pronounced “al-ME-say”). In August, the foundation became an associate member of OCI.

The word almise means “simple tools.” A tag-line in the organization’s advertising and official stamp translates to “equipping for life.” Together the name and slogan convey the mission of the ministry—to provide knowledge and practical skills—both for this life and as preparation for eternal life.

Fee-based classes in American English, computer literacy, and guitar lessons have helped establish credibility in the community and also offset a portion of the costs of Almise, but other sources of funding are necessary to maintain and expand the ministry.

Aside from caring for the local church and weekly outreach to men at the Regional Detention Center, the ministry conducts seminars on healthful cooking, family relationships, and Bible prophecy. Plans for the future include increasing focus on health evangelism, Bible work, and media.
